If you go back and re-read The Effective Executive, one of Peter Drucker’s most essential books, you’ll be reminded that its second chapter is a simple imperative: “Know Thy Time.” According to Drucker, executives need to know where their time goes in order to interrogate how they are actually spending it. He also urges executives to get out of the habit of trying to do important work in short spurts — they need long enough “time blocks” to be able to concentrate and do the type of work that has lasting, important effects.
